I had found this lovely French provincial side board buffet at auction years ago. It was that classic dark brown wood look with shiny gold handles.

A FRENCH PROVINCIAL HEADBOARD - my favorite gold paint
I built and painted this headboard to coordinate with a special set of gold and cream nightstands I had finish.

CONSIDER WHERE YOU'RE STARTING
I recently painted a classic pair of french provincial nightstands but there was no reason to paint the tops

ALTERNATIVE TO DARK STAINED TOP - color layering paint with ASCP
I wanted to create a nice rich
dark stained top on this project
but I would need to strip it first.
I can only strip furniture outdoors,
and it was the wrong time of year
to do this work so I came up with
an alternative plan.
GENEROSITY, HARD WORK, and PROVENCE
You hear the stories of ppl donating time or money to a good cause and the perception is they will get it back two fold. Pay it forward is what we call it these days, and this is my story of paying it forward and my perception of getting it back.

PAINTING A FRENCH CONSOLE GREY AND WHITE - thanksgiving
In this house, the wife refinishes a buffet on thanksgiving
while her husband prepares to serve turkey dinner.

The grey was mixed using Annie Sloan Old White,
Annie Sloan Provence and Annie Sloan Graphite.
It's a very soft grey and exactly what I wanted.
The hardware removed and painted with a flat bright white paint.
Hand painted all the trim details in white.
Sitting quietly, painting the trim, I would feel the warm sun
on my back as the sun plays hide and seek with the clouds.
When he has time hubby sits with me and enjoys a few moments of the day, before run back to the kitchen.
Before he goes he always leans in and steals a kiss.
Finally finishing the console with wax,
so it can be buffed to a shine.
Gentle distressing in the right places,
and the white against the soft grey,
makes the whole piece look amazing.
I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
A NEWBIE, A MOM WITH MAD SKILLS, AND THE PHOTOGRAPHER - beach cottage tables
This is the first glimpse at several posts I'll be writing this week about the workshop
I had at our home on Sunday.
Two of the furniture pieces we worked on were a pair of provincial tables
that George purchased at a local community yard sale.
Here you can see a few of my wonderful ladies caught on camera by
Sonja the sweetest girl and a fabulous photographer.
She only had her IPhone to shoot this but go check out her work:
These tables were in great shape so all they needed was some TLC and a new look.
They were also perfect candidates to show the ladies
how fun and quick chalk paint and wax can update pieces.
I wanted to show how I try to work with pieces rather than against them
so I asked the ladies to mask the tops off with newspaper.
European Paint Finishes a great inspirational blog for me and others,
had just did a posting that morning of the perfect color combination
that would accent the pretty blondish wood surface we had on this pair of tables.
So I tinted the chalk paint to achieve a soft grayish blue
and the tables bases were sprayed with it.
The ladies got to see how quickly the paint dries and how nicely it applies with a sprayer.
Between my 6 girls I had complete newbies (as Stephanie confessed quite quickly)
some girls with a bit of experience,
and I had Lisa (I'd hire her any day of the week) a mom with mad skills.
All the distressing on these tables were done with wet sponges,
thanks to George lending us his extras from the kitchen so everyone could get in there.
Once they were done giving them a great aged look I showed them
how to apply wax and how to buff the wax after it was dry.
The surface of the side table did have some marks and staining which I sanded out
before showing them how to apply the wipe on poly to refinish.
I think the ladies did a remarkable job.
I'd love it if you would also let them know how
you think they did by leaving a comment below ...
Next time we'll have
THE INQUISITOR, HER ASSISTANT, AND THE UPHOLSTER'S WIFE
and I'll show you how this coffee table turned out.

FUN WITH PHOTOGRAPHY - french coffee table
This solid maple table was painted with
10 min dry EXCEL spray paint in Oyster Grey.
It's a beautiful color and the paint provides a
remarkable hard, durable, and professional finish.
Unfortunetly it is hard to find and has a
very strong odor when first applied.
TEA ANYONE?
The view is amazing!
