HOW TO UPHOLSTER AN OPEN CHAIR BACK - step one
I've received many requests asking for this next tutorial on how I upholstered these open back chairs. This project has been divided into two parts, this article is part one.
FRENCH CHAIR MAKE OVER - pale provence & drop cloth
Officially today is the first day of summer!! YIPPEE
I am writing to you this morning fresh out of the shower, towel on my head, wrapped in a
robe, eating cereal, looking out the window in anticipation ...
only to see another miserably wet day. Time to UPHOLSTER!
THE BIRTHDAY CHAIR - antique white chair
I finished painting and upholstering that green vintage desk chair
I showed you last week. It was done for a special little girl's birthday.
I have a lot of ppl ask if upholstery is easy,
my answer is usually always the same.
It is the tear down that is horrible.
You are dealing with rusty staples and tacks, and this chair had been
re-upholstered before, making it almost impossible to get all the old staples out.
I actually used an angle grinder to deal with most of them. (don't do this at home)
Sometimes you also find animal hair, grass, cotton, and burlap,
all of which are dusty and dirty. So this is not my favorite thing to do.
Once I get past all that and start to rebuild, repaint, and reupholster
I find it fun!

BLACK AND WHITE TOILE - shabby chic dining chairs
4 tired 70's dining chairs came to me via Uncle Ronnie.
While I was working on a different set of chairs all propped up in the driveway
he stopped in to let me know there was 4 more chairs that needed my help just down the road.
THE CAPTAIN AND HIS SOLDIERS PT2 - union jack painted upholstery
After painting the frames of these vintage 80's dining chairs, I custom painted the seats with a union jack flag.
TOILE UPHOLSTERY - french country wooden chairs
When the weather is nice I run ragged working outside getting all sorts of projects painted. Unfortunately not all of them get finished in order but I
have managed to get some Toile chairs finished to share with you.

NO LONGER JUST A DINING CHAIR - balloon back chair
I really enjoy doing balloon back chairs. Not because they are easy to work on but because I love the shape so much.

THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG - blue bedroom chair
There will eventually be a second part to this post as this cute antique chair has a partner. They were both painted using blue and white chalk paint.
FIXING BROKEN DINING CHAIRS - sheild back chairs
I found a set of six vintage shield back dining chairs on CL. They were gorgeous and just what I wanted.
GEORGE TOLD ME I WAS HOT LAST NIGHT - slipper chair n ottoman
I started writing this post several days ago
just as something was hitting me and hitting me hard,
which I'll explain at the end.
I completed this slipper chair with the help of
The purchasers of this chair also requested a matching ottoman.
Taya and Matt are a lovely young couple and repeat customers.
I had the matching fabric and a couple of useful pieces waiting for redo.
The question would be ... would one of them work?
Attempt one, was too small,
Attempt two, was too tall,
Attempt three, was just right.
If you look closely you might realize this ottoman was made from
the only salvageable part of another arm chair, with great legs.
I've been MIA for the last few days due to a case of severe strep
throat. If you have ever been afflicted with this condition I now
understand and sympathize. I couldn't talk, eat, swallow, and the
worst part for me was not thinking straight due to a high fever for
36hrs straight. After a midnight visit to the hospital and high doses
of medication, the doc says it will take a few more days till I
started to feel normal again and I'm still having trouble eating and
drinking but I'm definitely back, with a funny sounding voice.

VINTAGE WHITE CHENILLE - reupholstered french chair
Earlier I showed the *BEFORE* of a little french chair I had been working on. It is now finished and ready to show off.
GARBAGE WEEK, A SISTER, AND A STRANGER - french slipper chair
It started with an email from a stranger.
Hi I have seen your posts and love what you do. It is "junk day"
pick up tomorrow. Anyway my neighbor has a credenza and table
out. French Provincial style. Free for the pick up. If interested
you need to come soon Let me know and I could get it for you.
Any ideas what we did next?
but those items you'll have to wait to see.
The subject of this post is about the next day
and my loving sister coming out to see what
else could be found.
We had a late morning start, bad traffic, and a
doctors appointment for the nephews we had to be
back for, leaving us with only 30 minutes to scour
the road sides for treasures.
Did I mention it was pouring rain?
She saw the chair first but we couldn't stop because of
traffic so it would have to wait till we came back this way.

Needless to say we got it.
I'll never forget my sister, 5'5 135lbs picking this
chair up and running across the busy road before a
semi truck barrelled past.
- dropcloth skirting
- white cord trim from a fancy comforter
- upholstery is from a heavy weight duvet cover
- double welting from the same duvet cover
I'm always buying new and beautiful bed covers. A lot of them
are heavy weight, good quality, and sometimes vintage. So when I need
to upholster something the first place I look is my linen stash.
