THE MERCANTILE CABINET - photo shoot
I had a fun photo shoot with this vintage cabinet that I rebuilt. I used several vintage suit cases, a large reed basket, some old pop crates, an old window and my new canvas tote bag. I love the look and feel of the piece.
PROVINCIAL CHAIRS
I found a couple of good chairs over the weekend and started painting them as soon as they arrived home.

Let the bells ring out and the banners fly.
I've had an extreme makeover and I'm looking marvelous.
We had a long road together getting each element finished just right.
Sometimes I just didn't understand her vision and wouldn't cooperate with what she wanted.
It was a vision of beauty.
I hear that next time she's gonna show more pictures
of how we created this look together.

EDWARDIAN SCRIPT - table for two
The weather was wonderful and warm
so I decided to do the photo shoot outdoors for you on this one.
This little table was an auction buy and quite a simple redo once I decided to
keep the lovely wood top.
The chairs were orphaned and the natural wood on the seats go nicely with the table.
The seats are upholstered in a heavy weight woven linen with stripping
and the chairs backs are each numbered with Edwardian script.

COTTAGE SIGN - lady pamela
Lady Pamela emailed me after stumbling upon my last show in South Surrey,
she also happens to be a fellow blogger that I follow.
Here is some of the email she sent me:
Hi Kristy,
I have been wanting a sign for my
home that says "Lady Pamela's Cottage" for many years now,
but could
never decide on what style exactly. I really loved the signs you had at the sale.
The only thing that I know for sure is that it
has to say "Lady Pamela's Cottage" on it.
Other than that, perhaps
my favorite white roses.
I enjoy working on signs and even more when there is a direction as clear as Pamela's.
Her sign is made from a vintage foot board cut to 35" wide to fit her space and an old rose mirror frame.
Yes Mother if the roses look familiar it is your old mirror from the bathroom.
Don't give me any grief you gave it to me years ago.
The new owner has only seen photos so far but here is some of what she wrote me:
Kristy! My mouth dropped open.
It is soooooo beautiful
and perfect.
I can't believe you caught the essence of my decorating soul.
I am giddy with happiness.
Lady Pamela
And now I need a favor from you.
Over the weekend I received a very nice email with this attachment.

CHANGING GEARS - vancouver subway art dresser
I did it in reverse!
Rather than the black background of my first Vancouver Subway Art dresser
I've finished this next one in white.
It started as a beat up, orangie colored, tall boy.
The drawers were is good shape but the runners and glides had to be replaced
that's why they look so wonky in this photo.
The top was removed to refinish and
the drawers were removed for the repairs I had to do inside the cabinet.
On a beautiful sunny day I sprayed the body in ASCP Old White
and stripped the top to be re-stained and waxed.

HOW TO MAKE SUBWAY ART - reverse stencil
There are a few tutorials available around blog land showing how
to achieve a subway art look, so why am I offering another?
I wanted a certain finished look that I was not able to find
and I wanted to share some of the unique qualities that AS Chalk Paint offer in the process.
I used vinyl letters creating a reverse stencil on top of white chalk paint,
The letters were made with commercial adhesive vinyl
left over from my contractor days. (drawer liner or mac tac should work)
I used a computer program to get the size and shape I wanted
then printed them out and cut them by hand.
I only wanted the white for the letters so I washed the rest off with water.
I did not want all that extra white coming through areas that were going to be distressed.
The remaining steps I took are:
1) painted over everything with AS Graphite
2) once dry, remove the vinyl letters
3) waxed the drawer face
4) distress with sand paper
5) wax and buff to a shine
The finished project is pictured below.
You can see some of the drawers have the extra white underneath.
I found it was messy that is why I removed it but maybe you'll like it that way for your project.

ART DECO TURNED SHAKER - vancouver subway art dresser
How to take an Art Deco Dresser and give it a Shaker Style.
One thing that dates art deco furniture is the flush and rounded tops.
So I removed the original top and replaced it with a nice fresh pine board cut to size.
With some walnut stain, wax, and my new gloves we were off to the races.
Having a curvy kick at the bottom is common in a lot of furniture
but I removed this one to get straighter lines and offer a masculine feel.
Two final steps to help achieve the look was to add the vintage metal wheels
and simple metal knobs down both sides of the drawers.
And that's how you get a shaker look from an Art Deco Dresser.

VANCOUVER ART - subway art tall dresser
I've been wanting to do a true tall boy subway dresser for some time.
And recently a couple of my fellow blog ladies have inspired me to get moving on that project.
First up is Bliss @ Bliss Ranch with her Kodak Dresser.
And secondly is Suzan @ Simply Vintageous
My main inspiration started with this fabulous shaker style tallboy @ Lindauer Designs
But I had to do it in the VANCOUVER style,
and add what I'm calling my signature typo.
Only those who know Vancouver should be able to find the spelling mix-up,
but for the most part you read it the way you are suppose to.
Next time I'll share how I transformed this mid century look into a shaker style,
in a few steps.
