PAINTING TURQUOISE MIRRORS - oval plastic mirror frames

Verdigris is the common name for the natural green patina formed when copper, brass or bronze is weathered
and exposed to air or seawater over a period of time.

I painted these vintage oval mirrors in a
turquoise verdigris and I will try to explain what I did.

These plastic framed mirrors were original gold.
The gold color was going to represent the
weathered metal of true verdigris.

The frames had been painted in a white latex and they were fully cure for over a month. I wanted the white to be strong to hold up to the distressing I would be doing later. A faster way would be to use a flat white oil spray paint on the frame first.

The finial layer was a turquoise mixture of Annie Sloan Chalk
Paint in Florence and white. As soon as it was dry I scrubbed back the turquoise to expose the white with a kitchen sponge. I then used a razor blade to scrape back the white exposing the gold.

The true oxidation process ends up being rather rough and unpredictable on real metal and using the different paints helped achieve that look.

Hope this inspires you to paint something in a VERDIGRIS finish!!
