TWINS - a pair of single beds

I found this set of bunk beds at a yard sale this past weekend.

While we were talking price with the owner,
daddy called my cell to let me know the cost of my motorbike repair.

I have a trials bike but only get to take it out about once a year.

This year's trip is coming up fast, but I'm unsure if I can get away or not.
Needless to say the bike has to be ready regardless, which means a new part.

So while getting the price from daddy, the price for these beds was still up in the air.
I pulled some cash out of my wallet (what I was willing to pay) and handed it to George
to finish the negotiations.

Well before I was off the phone the beds were being loaded into the van.

Now the posts connecters were either missing or broken and only one post finial remained
so they couldn't easily be used as bunkbeds anymore.

I wish I had a room to stage these in, I could have done them up wonderfully.

There were a few cross bars but the supports on the rails were installed,
well we'll just say *badly*

It took a few hours to fix the supports and cut more cross bars, as well as a few other fixes.

Once they were fixed it was just a matter of deglossing, priming, and finally painting.

This pretty pair is currently listed on the AVAILABLE page.

PAINTING FURNITURE BLACK - getting started

Anne-Marie sent me an email with the subject line ....

*HOW TO GET STARTED*

They had moved into a new house and had bought a beautiful french provincial bedroom set. She wanted to paint them black.
I've had this question asked of me many times so I thought I would share what I told her.

SAVE MONEY - my screw drawer

Something I find very handy and saves a great deal of money on screws is my screw drawer.

I dismantle a great deal of furniture and when I do this I keep all the screws and other misc. hardware.

All the screws go to the screw drawer where I have an old cookie sheet that spreads them out.
When I need screws for another project I can simply search back and forth over the tray
and find what I need.

I STOLE THE NEIGHBORS FLOWERS - cut hydrangeas

While doing a simple errand yesterday I passed by a couple Hydrangea bushes.

George favors them in blue so I stopped to get him some.

He does bring me flowers on occasion.

Arranged in a silver tea pot,
CLASSIC!
Hope you enjoy them as much as we do.
UPDATE from yesterday.....

My compressor couldn't get over 60 psi anymore so she's had to be retired.
Last night we found her bigger sister with the help of the great ppl of Canadian Tire - White Rock,
and I put her to work this afternoon.

Here is the custom headboard all done mentioned in yesterday's post.

She's heading to a mountain retreat.

DEAD COMPRESSOR - renate's headboard

It all started with this 70's oak headboard.

Okay maybe I jumped the gun here, I suppose it really started with a drawing of a headboard.

A drawing with custom measurements.

So back to this headboard.

Every element of it was dismantled with a robertson driver.

Considering I had received such detailed measurements I had to wait for the right piece to come along.

Many of the pieces were cut to fit the new configuration.

The face sheilds were brought together.

Priming continued.

The legs were extended 2".

Extra bits were all brought together to fill out the height requested.

Some fancy had to be added.

In the form of wall candle holders I found at the second hand store.

They originally had baskets screwed on the front for the candle to sit in.
I removed the baskets and used the holes to attached them to the new headboard.

But alas I only got the primer coat finished before my compressor kicked the bucket.

So once the new compressor gets open and the final finish is applied, this is really
all you get to see.

RESIZING A BEDFRAME - antiqued black bed

This bed frame was originally an odd size, maybe something from Goldilocks and the three bears. Too wide to be a queen yet too short to be a king.

There is truly a surprise hiding inside this one
and this time it's not simple drawer liners.

ROSE BED WITH A VENEER TIP - white vintage double bedframe

The veneer on the rails were mostly gone or ready to simply peel off,
however there was a bit that still needed my extra special removal technique.
drum roll plz ....... WATER & a bit of patience

Most glue used in the past to adhere veneers to furniture are water soluble there fore will soften once
water has penetrated into it. All you need to do is let a damp cloth sit on the veneer for a period of
time then come along and start peeling it away.
No need for harsh heat, damaging chisels, or needless sanding.

Below you can see she is almost thru the sanding phase. (rear bed)

A few days of priming, sanding, and painting and she's complete.

Oh silly me did I forget something .....

The rose applique I used was bought at a second-hand store and stamped with
1974 Miller Studio Inc.
It's a wall hanging made of some kind of fiber glass material
that I had to sand flat on the back side to sit flush with the head board before nailing in place.

Here's a sneak peak at tomorrows post.

SEE YOU THEN.
